Based on Haruki Murakami’s short story published in 2013, Drive My Car was adapted for the screen by director Ryusuke Hamaguchi, widely regarded as one of the most talented young filmmakers in Japan. The film achieved remarkable success, winning the Best Screenplay Award at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival and the Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards, among many other honors, continuing to garner widespread acclaim.
The vinyl soundtrack, composed by Eiko Ishibashi, which sold out immediately upon its release in January, is now receiving a highly anticipated additional pressing.
Featuring ten compositions derived from two central melodies, the album reconstructs the music written for the film into a cohesive standalone work. Collaborating with Ishibashi are Jim O’Rourke, Tatsuhisa Yamamoto, Marty Holoubek, Toshiaki Sudo, and Atsuko Hatano, blending acoustic performances, electronics, and environmental sounds used in the film into a beautifully unified soundscape.
Mixing and mastering were handled by Jim O’Rourke, the jacket design by Yutaka Kimura (Central67), who has designed many of Ishibashi’s works, and the cover illustration by Mayo Akao, inspired by the film’s visuals. The result is a masterpiece that shines in harmony with the film itself.
