Etsuko Yakushimaru’s long-awaited new song “After-School Distraction” is the ending theme for the TV anime High Score Girl!
As an artist and producer, Yakushimaru has worked on numerous projects including Soutaiseiriron, and has been recognized internationally — she even won the Grand Prize at the world’s largest media art award, the Ars Electronica STARTS Prize, known as the “Oscar of media art.” She continues to transcend boundaries across music, art, and science.
Having previously performed theme songs for series such as Arakawa Under the Bridge, Mawaru Penguindrum, Space Dandy, and Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal, Yakushimaru now presents her much-anticipated new song After-School Distraction, the ending theme for High Score Girl!
According to High Score Girl author Rensuke Oshikiri, who made a passionate request for this collaboration, “The only person whose voice could express the feelings of Ono, the heroine of High Score Girl, is Yakushimaru.” The result is a song uniquely hers — a blend of after-school melancholy and revolutionary spirit — perfectly embodying the world of the anime, with the author’s full endorsement.
The recording features Yakushimaru alongside her longtime Soutaiseiriron collaborators Seiichi Nagai and Motoki Yamaguchi. Both the music and artwork were fully produced and directed by Yakushimaru herself, maintaining the signature style of her and Soutaiseiriron’s previous works. The jacket artwork also includes participation from High Score Girl creator Rensuke Oshikiri.
